529573 Sergeant Albert John NEWTON, No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron.
This airman was the rear gunner of an aircraft which carried out an attack on Essen in daylight. Whilst flying near the Dutch coast, his aircraft was intercepted by two enemy fighters. The enemy made successive attacks from astern. During the third attack Sergeant Newton, who had vigorously defended his aircraft throughout, was wounded in the feet. Despite this, he continued to engage the enemy, and following an accurate burst from his guns, one of the fighters went into a steep dive and was not seen again. The remaining fighter closed in for another attack but Sergeant Newton, although in considerable pain, met it with resolute fire. The attacker broke away and terminated the engagement. By his courage and devotion to duty this airman contributed materially to the safe return of his aircraft.
