| Distinguished Flying Medal. N.Z.391832 Sergeant Merryn EVANS, Royal New Zealand Air Force, No. 40 Squadron. One night in June, 1941 this airman was captain of an aircraft which carried out an attack on a dock at Rotterdam. Visibility was poor over the target area but, in spite of heavy anti-aircraft and searchlight activity and the presence of enemy fighters, Segeant Evans flew over the area for an hour to to ensure that his objective was accurately located. He finally released his bombs which were seen to burst on or very close to the dock. On the return journey his aircraft was attacked by a Messerschmitt 110. By excellent airmanship, Sergeant Evans enabled his rear gunner to fire a burst at the attacker which caused it to dive towards the sea, out of control, where it probably crashed.
